Module/Unit Summary

In this context protected areas describe landscape units ranging from discrete nature reserves of a few hectares in size to extensive multi-use areas which include national parks and biological reserves. The management of protected areas requires an integrated approach, drawing on the skills of multi-disciplinary teams, and dealing with both complex and often disparate issues. This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the scientific and cultural concepts underpinning protected area management, and where appropriate propose new concepts. Finally, the module provides students with the opportunity to evaluate critically and challenge current practices through the use of case studies
