Module/Unit Summary

The concept of ecosystem management has recently moved out from the exclusively academic realm into mainstream conservation. As science continues to inform conservation management of the importance of adopting more environmentally sensitive techniques of practice then so the demand for a range of specialist skills increases. This module develops the principles of ecosystem functional approach to management with particular reference to mimicking natural disturbance patterns, and the use of ecosystem models. Furthermore, it also incorporates human-related factors into conceptual thinking. This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the concepts underpinning ecosystem management. It also encourages students to evaluate critically current conservation practices and demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge based on new concepts and techniques in managing sustainable ecosystems.
