Postgraduate Qualifications
Students on this course will be given the opportunity to progress to a relevant Masters programme in the Postgraduate School.

Course Aims

The horse industry has undergone rapid development in the last decade and a wide range of career opportunities exist for those who can offer a combination of relevant scientific, practical skills in areas such as equitation, breeding and stud management, youngstock production and marketing, whilst at the same time developing commercial awareness and business skills.

Within the second and third years of the course, students with the desire to manage an equestrian enterprise or run their own business, are able to develop a specialism in equine business management through the study of specified modules. The business management skills aquired are transferable to many other professions outside the immediate equine sector.

Course Content

This course combines the scientific, technical and commercial aspects of horse management with the development of practical equestrian skills and business awareness. The programme is offered on a modular basis allowing flexibility and choice in the subjects studied. Students study a broad range of subjects in year one, and can then choose to follow a named pathway of business management modules. These modules are enhanced by the College's extensive contacts within the equine industry, with visits to, and speakers from, external equine enterprises making an important contribution to student learning.

Special Features

This course will appeal to students wishing to manage an equestrian enterprise or run their own business. It combines vocational training with the development of business knowledge and commercial awareness.

Students are actively involved with the running of enterprises and events. The student experience is enhanced further by a comprehensive programme of external visits and guest speakers.

Industrial Placements and International Exchanges

The College has extensive links with employers overseas. These links provide students with the opportunity for an optional industrial placement, should they wish to supplement their existing experience within the equine industry.

International exchanges are currently available with universities in the USA, Canada, Holland and Finland as part of this course.

It is possible to tailor your degree at Writtle to what you want to do after graduation. I knew event management was my goal so I tailored my assignments and dissertation towards this.
