College Patron - Alan Titchmarsh MBE

College Patron - Alan Titchmarsh
"Writtle has a wonderful reputation. It is one of the very best horticultural colleges in the UK and I hope I will be able to help promote the college in my capacity as patron."

Alan Titchmarsh MBE, probably the best-known gardener in the UK became the patron of Writtle College in November 2001.

Although best known as a presenter of Gardeners' World, Ground Force and How to be a Gardener, over the years Alan has made an enormous contribution to the horticultural industry.

Having trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Alan spent several years as a horticultural journalist before moving into television. His highly successful freelance career in broadcasting and writing includes more than 30 gardening books and twice being named "Gardening Writer of the Year". He even has a waxwork model at Madam Tussauds in London.

However, it was his enthusiasm and dedication to 'gardening' that led the College to present Alan with an Honorary Doctorate Degree in 1999. This was the beginning of his relationship with the staff and students of Writtle College.

"You've given a lot of ladies a lot of pleasure," was the wonderful comment made by the Queen when she presented Alan with an MBE for his services to horticulture and broadcasting. His decision to become patron of Writtle College was just as warmly received, and we value his contribution to our college community.
